COLUMBUS, Ohio ?- The Arizona women’s golf team posted an opening round score of eight-over-par 296 at the NCAA National Championships, hosted by Ohio State University.  The Cats are currently in fourth place, out of 24 teams, heading into round two.

“We gave a real solid effort today,” said head coach Greg Allen.  “It was a great start for us, something we’ve struggled with this season.”

Coming off a career-low tournament score of 223 (+7) at the West Regional, freshman Sommer Scholl continued to lead the Wildcats in Ohio, carding a one-under-par 71 today.  Scholl led Arizona with three birdies in the first round and is in a three-way-tie for fourth place.

“Sommer has really turned it on as of late,” Allen said.  “She was able to get her confidence up at regionals.  It’s really nice to see her playing well at the right time.”

Arizona is only five strokes back of Central Region champion USC.  The Trojans posted a 291 (+3) in the first round and currently sit atop the leader bored followed by ASU (292) and Florida (293).

Finishing day one in a tie for fifth place was Wake Forest and Duke, each shooting nine-over-par 297.  Duke has won three of the last six national championships including last year in Oregon.

Arizona senior Cassandra Kirkland carded a one-over-par 73 and is tied for 10th place heading into round two.  Trailing Kirkland by one stroke is freshman Adriana Zwanck (74), who is tied for 21st place.

Rounding out the Arizona squad is freshman Amanda Wilson and junior Rachel Gavin.  Wilson posted a six-over-par 78, while Gavin shot an 84 (+12).

Pepperdine’s Eileen Vargas carded a four-under-par 68 and sits atop the individual leader bored after the first round.

“This is a tough course, but we were able to make some great saves and made birdies when we had the opportunity,” explained Allen.

The Wildcats tee-off at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) tomorrow at the Scarlet Golf Course for the second round of the NCAA National Championships.
