BERKELEY, Calif.- The Arizona baseball team fell 2-1 to California in the series finale at Evans Field on Sunday. The loss drops the Wildcats to 24-15 overall and 5-7 in the Pac-10. With the victory, California improves to 23-18 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Justin Nelson's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference in the game as California starter Matt Brown piched a complete-game, four-hitter. The sophomore right-hander struck out a career high 10 Arizona hitters.
The Golden Bears carried a 1-0 lead throught the first five innings before Brad Hassey tied the contest with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth, notching the score at 1-1. Nelson's homer off of UA's Joe Little in the seventh fell just over the rightfield fence along the foul line breaking the tie and giving Cal the series saving victory.
The Wildcats return to Tucson for a match up with Grand Canyon University on Tuesday before opening a three-game non-conference series with UC Riverside Friday-Sunday. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
