NCAA Region 2 Softball

Tucson, Ariz.

Thursday, May 18 - First Round

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Ohio State junior Jamee Juarez threw a 10-inning shutout and the Buckeyes turned a triple play in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, where a single up the middle by junior Megan Schwab gave OSU a 1-0 win over No. 25 Auburn Thursday in the opening game of the Arizona Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Hosted by No. 1-ranked Arizona at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium, No. 3 seed Ohio State (39-21) advances to play the winner of No. 1 seed Arizona and No. 4 seed Marist at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) Friday, while Auburn (34-21) will face the loser of the Arizona-Marist game at 9 p.m. (EDT).

Juarez, now 17-10, scattered six hits and notched her 500th career strikeout in the first inning.  The Buckeye hurler just outlasted Auburn’s Holly Currie, who was touched up for seven hits, but did not surrender an earned run in 10 innings of work.

"There were quite a few defensive game-savers out there today," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “And defense starts with pitching and Jamee threw a phenomenal game. It was one of our best defensive games of the season and I hope we continue to bring out A-game all weekend. I’m proud of our kids and hope we come back out tomorrow and continue to give it our best shot.”

Ohio State advances to face the winner of the Arizona-Marist game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., while Auburn will face the loser at 4 p.m. in the first elimination game of the Tucson Regional

Ohio State head coach Linda Kalafatis:

On the triple play to force extra innings: "Wow. Our defense was spectacular today. I think we had a lot of game-saving defensive plays. Brittany (Vanderink) came in and made a good play and flip to Christina (Douglas) at first, and Christina spun and fired over to third for the third out. It was a great play."

"Great defense comes from great pitching. This was one of our best defensive games of the year."

On the diving catch by LF Megan Schwab to end the ninth inning, while colliding with CF Chelsea Baker: "She (Taryn Gray) hit the ball a little further than we thought. We were either going to catch it or it was going to be a game-winner for them. I am proud we made the catch. Megan (Schwab) not only got to the ball but it stuck in her golve through the collision."

On the status of CF Chelsea Baker after the collision: "She will probably out for the rest of the series (knee)."

Ohio State P Jamee Juarez:

On a potential re-match (Feb. 25, 5-1 UA win) with Arizona: "We stayed right with them for the most part when we played them. The key is to keep their first two hitters (Caitlin Lowe and Autumn Champion) off base. But, that first game was a long time ago. It doesn't mean much now."

Auburn head coach Tina Deese:  "I thought that both teams played very hard.  It was a tight game, and the pitchers did a really good job on the mound.  I felt like the team that got the first break was going to win the game."

"They had a lot of speed, but we did a good job of combatting that."

On OSU's triple play in the seventh:  "It was just a mistake on our part.  We did a poor job of communicating on the field."
