TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona Football team held their third scrimmage of the spring on Saturday in front of returning lettermen in town for Football Lettermen Weekend. The session was the eleventh of 15 spring days allowed by the NCAA.

The Wildcats held their two-hour practice session in Arizona Stadium. The team ran 76 plays.

“During spring ball it goes back and forth, one day the it will be the offense, the next day will be the defense,” second-year Head Coach Mike Stoops said. “Offensively I thought the backs are running the ball well. It’s good to have Mike Jefferson, Anthony Johnson and B.J. Vickers as good threats out there. We are pushing forward.”

Junior Adam Austin continued to show his arm strength on Saturday as he took the offensive snaps in place of injured starter sophomore Richard Kovalcheck. The Mundelein, Ill., native finished the day 20 of 48 for 191 yards.

Anthony Johnson continues to be Austin’s favorite target. The 6-2 sophomore connected with Austin six times for 65 yards. Junior Mike Jefferson caught three passes for 14 yards and Syndric Steptoe received one of Austin’s passes for 24 yards.

Sophomore Chris Henry led the running backs Saturday as he finished the day with 10 carries for 53 yards. Mike Bell carried 10 times for 28 yards. Bell had the lone touchdown of the day, with a three-yard rush into the end zone. Gilbert Harris rushed for 28 yards in seven carries.

Defensively, the red-shirt freshmen continue to shine. This weekend Ronnie Palmer stopped the offense. The Spring, Texas native finished the scrimmage with six tackles and one pass broken up. In addition Wilrey Fontenot, Andrew Ford and Yanvi Barnett all had five tackles Linebacker Copeland Bryan tallied three sacks during the scrimmage.

Both Nick Folk and Jason Bondizo converted on their field goal attempts during Saturday’s scrimmage. Folk hit his 20-yard attempt and Bondizo hit a 38-yard field goal.

Arizona will wrap spring drills up next week with three practices before the Spring Game on April 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Arizona Stadium.
