TUCSON - The Arizona women's golf junior varsity team improved upon its team score by one shot to claim third place at the 2008 Mountain Shootout. The event was hosted by Northern Arizona University at the Continental Country Club, played on a par-73, 6,014-yard layout.
The Wildcats completed a two-round effort with a total of 631. Arizona fired a team total of 315 on day two after wrapping up day one at 316. Florida Southern won the team title with a two-day total of 587 while host Northern Arizona was runner-up at 619.
Freshman Isabelle Boineau completed her first collegiate tournament in a tie for second place, shooting a 1-over round of 74 on Tuesday to finish with a 1-under total of 145. Heather Burgner of Florida Southern won the event, shooting 67 on the day to finish at 5-under par (145).
Senior Marisa Smith trimmed five shots off of her opening round total and shot 77 to complete the tournament at +13 (159) to share 13th place. Junior Emily Mason also improved from her Monday round, dropping two shots to finish at 81 and a two-round total of 164 (+18).
Senior Brooke Schneider and freshman Ashley Malaska completed the fivesome for the Wildcats. Schneider carded rounds of 80 and 88 to finish at 23-over 169 for the event while Malaska made her collegiate debut with scores of 87 and 83 to shoot 170 (+24).
The full Wildcats squad will be in action Sept. 26-28 at the Mason Randolph Championships in Franklin, Tenn. The event, hosted by Vanderbilt University, will take place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club, a par-72 course laid out over 6,069 yards.
