Tucson, Ariz. (Aug. 29) - Playing in the first day of the Four Points University Plaza Arizona Invitational, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was narrowly edged by Iowa State, 2-1, at home in the season opener on Friday. Arizona opens the year at 0-1-0, while the Cyclones stand at 1-0-0.
Iowa State jumped on the Cats right away, when Amy Flores scored just 1:27 into the game off a Kate Kirwan assist. The two teams battled back and forth, then Wildcat junior Candice Wilks was fouled hard in the box during the 26th minute. She connected on the resulting penalty kick and tied the score at 1-1.
The tie didn't last for long, however, as Flores struck again in the 28th minute, using her head to nudge forward a free kick from Arlene Samuel. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game.
The Wildcats finished the game with a 13-7 edge in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Freshmen Lauren Winters and Erin Bevacqua each had three shots, with all of Winters' being on-goal. Sophomore midfielder Lisa Kosena had two shots, as did fellow sophomore Althea Jones. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Juarez played the full 90 minutes in the nets for the Cats, registering three saves.
In the first game of the night, Weber State and Kent State played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.
Action continues at the tournament on Sunday, Aug. 31, with Weber State facing Iowa State at 11 a.m., followed by Arizona and Kent State at 2 p.m. Both contests will be played at Murphey Stadium, 15th Street and Plumer Avenue.
