Arizona freshman cornerback Antoine Cason and redshirt freshman offensive tackle Pater Graniello have been named to Freshman All-America teams by The Sporting News, and also collected league honors from the publication.
Cason earned TSN first-team Freshman All-America honors and was named Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year by the outlet. Graniello earned second-team All-America honors and joined Cason, quarterback Richard Kovalcheck, linebacker Dane Krogstad and cornerback Wilrey Fontenot on The Sporting News' Pac-10 All-Freshman team.
Junior safety Darrell Brooks earned Rivals.com All-Pac-10 honors. The network also tabbed Cason for first-team Freshman All-America honors and named Graniello to its Freshman All-America second team.
Brooks was UA's leading tackler with 73, plus led the club with 10 passes defensed including one interception. Cason was second with 70 hits and led the club with four interceptions, the most for a freshman since TSN frosh All-American Michael Jolivette had the same total in 2000. Graniello played tackle and guard and started all 11 games in 2004. Krogstad will be UA's top returning tackler at linebacker after totaling 48 last season. Fontenot broke up four passes, had 46 hits and recovered three fumbles including one for a touchdown to seal UA's victory at Washington. Kovalcheck took over the starting role mid way through the year and capped his second as Territorial Cup game MVP with three touchdown passes that helped beat Arizona State.
