TEMPE--The University of Arizona took it to the opposition in its softball season opener at the Kajikawa Classic tournament here Friday afternoon, with senior Sarah Akamine throwing a no-hitter and the Cats exploding for a 13-0 victory over Western Michigan.
UA scored seven times in the first and crossed six times in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of 14 walks issued by two Broncos pitchers. The Cats had a modest seven hits but Lauren Schutler and K'Lee Arredondo had two each and Kristen Arriola had a key knock to give each of the them three RBI.
Akamine tossed her first individual no-hitter and allowed only two base runners, one a walk issued in the third and the other on a fielding error by Arredondo in the fifth.
She had combined with Taryne Mowatt for a no-hitter on Feb. 29, 2007 against South Florida in Tucson in a one-inning appearance of a five-inning 12-0 victory. Mowatt threw UA's most previous no-no, a 3-0 blanking at No. 23 Washington on May 4, 2008.
UA faces Purdue in a second game Friday. Check here for more news and box scores for both games later...
