TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona softball team shut out Phoenix College in its last exhibition games of the 2005 season on Saturday. The Wildcats blanked Phoenix in seven innings in the first game, 8-0, and went on to notch a 4-0 win in game two.
In the first game, junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell took the mound for the Cats and struck out 16 of the 22 batters she faced.
Arizona touched up Phoenix College for three runs in the first inning, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Sophomore Caitlin Lowe led the Wildcats’ offense with two runs, two hits and four stolen bases in the game. Senior Jackie Coburn helped the Cats’ offensive effort with a solo homer in the fifth inning to put the Cats up, 4-0.
In game two, freshman pitcher Taryne Mowatt earned the win for the Wildcats, striking out seven over four innings. Junior pitcher Leslie Wolfe took over for the final three innings, striking out three.
Offensively, Arizona struck quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding their final run in the third. The top of the order did the scoring for the Cats, with runs by Lowe, juniors Courtney Fossatti and Shelly Schultz, and sophomore Kristie Fox. Fox led Arizona’s game-two offense with two hits, one of which was a solo homer.
Arizona kicks off its regular season with the Arizona Pepsi Classic tournament from Feb. 4-6 at Hillenbrand Stadium, beginning at 9 a.m.
