Wildcats Fall Short to Miami, 4-3

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 32-ranked University of Arizona men’s tennis team suffered their first loss of the season this afternoon in the first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against the No. 44-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes. The Wildcats clinched the doubles point for the second week in a row after splitting the first two matches, but dropped four singles matches at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.


“We played hard but Miami just got us at the end,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “This match will only make us tougher as the season continues on.”


In doubles action, on court five, in the No. 3 spot, junior Jason Zafiros and freshman Andre Vidaller jumped out to an early 5-0 lead against Waylon Chin and Eduardo Pavia to start the match. The Hurricane duo crawled their way back earning three straight games to make it 5-3. After trading games, Zafiros and Vidaller secured the match 8-4 after sealing three straight games.


On court one, freshman Giacomo Miccini made his Wildcat debut with senior Jay Goldman against the Hurricane (2-1, 0-0 ACC) duo of Keith Crowley and Christian Blocker. The Wildcat (1-1, 0-0 Pac-10) pair fell behind early 4-1, before capturing two straight games. The two teams battled before Crowley and Blocker took the set 8-6 to tie the doubles matches at 1-1.


Similar to last week the Wildcats clinched the doubles point in the No. 2 position in the hands of seniors Andres Carrasco and Borja Malo. The two scored early, taking a 4-1 lead before Miami’s Carl Sundberg and Pedro Ast bounced back. The Wildcat duo went up 7-4 before Sundberg and Ast sealed three games to tie it at 7-7. Carrasco and Malo closed the match out 9-7 to earn the Wildcats the doubles point.


In singles action, the Wildcats dropped four matches to the Hurricanes. On court four, Zafiros helped the Wildcats take an early 2-0 lead after he breezed to a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Sundberg.


The Hurricanes earned a point of their own after Pavia propelled to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Malo on court six.


Arizona dropped another point on court two to tie it 2-2, when Blocker rolled on to a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Goldman.


The Wildcats went ahead 3-2 against Miami on court five after Vidaller topped Diego Soto 6-4, 6-2.  


Miami’s Crowley edged Miccini in a three-setter two sets on court three to tie the match 3-3. In the first set, the Wildcat freshman notched the first set 6-4, suffered a close second set loss 7-5, before falling 6-3 to Crowley in the third.


The match came down to court one where Carrasco and Chin faced off. Carrasco edged Chin in the first set 7-5, dropped the second set 6-2 and fell in a tough 6-3 third set to give Miami their fourth point and the victory. 


The Wildcats will now face No. 40 Mississippi State tomorrow at 11 a.m. Tucson Time. The Bulldogs fell to No. 10 Texas A&M 4-3 earlier today.


Scouting the Mississippi State Bulldogs: The team holds a 0-1 dual match record. The Bulldogs competed in the SEC Indoor Championships and the Auburn Invitational to kick-off the New Year.  Mississippi State has one player ranked in the ITA singles rankings. Louis Cant swings in at No. 60. The team also has a pair of double’s players ranked in the ITA double’s rankings. George Coupland and Zach White are ranked No. 53 and Coupland and Ilyushin are ranked No. 53.


The Series vs. Mississippi State: It is the second meeting between the two schools, with the Bulldogs holding a 1-0 advantage over the Wildcats.


The Last Meeting: Mississippi State 5, Arizona 3: March 3, 1991: Mississippi edged Arizona 5-3 at the Miami Invitational.
