TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 1 Arizona softball team (16-1) defeated Sam Houston State, 8-0, in five innings in UA’s first game of its Hillenbrand Invitational.

Sophomore pitcher Taryne Mowatt (8-1) has now matched her record from last season, as she pitched her way to a two-hit shutout.  Mowatt struck out nine Bearkat hitters, all while giving up no walks in five innings of work.

Arizona got on the board in the top of the first, when Kristie Fox hit a home run, scoring Autumn Champion.  The two-run blast was Fox’s second of the season, and first at Hillenbrand Stadium since her April 2, 2005 walk-off grand slam against Cal.

The rest of the Wildcats followed Fox’s lead, as Callista Balko (3) and Caitlin Lowe (1) hit solo homers in the second inning, giving UA a, 4-0, lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Arizona kept the pressure on in the fourth with four runs, as the first seven batters reached base.  Arizona’s rally included a double, four singles, two walks and one Bearkat error.

UA continues play in the Hillenbrand Invitational at 5 p.m. against Long Beach State tonight.
