California seized the lead after round one with a team total of 288 (E). The Golden Bears were led by the tournament's individual leader, freshman Susan Huarte, who shot an opening round of 69 (-3). No. 4 Southern California, No. 6 Stanford and No. 21 Arizona State share third place with opening-day totals of 295 (+7).
Ochoa, ranked No. 1 in both the CGF MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings and the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, drained five birdies while carding a first-round of two-under par 70. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native has not finished a tournament in lower than third place since a ninth-place showing at her first collegiate event.
Gulbis sits just two strokes back of the tournament lead and one stroke behind Ochoa. The freshman shot a round of one-under par 71 to wrap up today's action in sole possession of third place. Gulbis, a native of Sacramento, Calif., is seeking her third collegiate tournament championship.
Also scoring for the Wildcats in round one were junior Cristina Baena and sophomore Laura Myerscough. Baena shot an opening round of 76 (+4) and stands tied for 27th place, while Myerscough is one stroke back after a first round of 77 (+5) and is tied for 34th place.
Senior Christelle Cuzon is competing as an individual and is tied for 19th place with a first-round score of three-over par 75. Sophomore Anne Lee turned in a seven-over par 79 and is tied for 45th.
Tuesday's second round begins at 8 a.m. Arizona will be paired with California and Arizona State for round two.
