TUCSON - Arizona Wildcat women's tennis finished at the University of New Mexico Invitational on a high note and will be using their performances as a learning experience.
"The day went well overall," said head coach Vicky Maes. "Sarah played a fantastic match to win the title. The girl she played was solid and she really had to battle. Susan and Debora also played better and that was good to see. I do feel that, as a group, we make too many mental errors out there which often give our opponents a cheap advantage. This will prove costly in the spring for some. We need to do a better job of shot selection and decision making on the court, understanding the big points better instead of rushing through them. Fortunately, our fall matches give us plenty of opportunities to work on these areas but a sense of urgency is definitely needed."
Junior, Sarah Landsman played Veronica Popovici from the University of Wyoming for the singles title. Landsman won the championship, 7-6, 6-4. In consolation singles, freshman Kim Stubbe lost to Michaela Bezdickova from the University of New Mexico. Freshman Susan Mc Rann beat Orsi Golovics from Northern Arizona University. Junior Debora Castany beat Doris Berkeric from Western New Mexico University.
The Wildcats will play next at the Cal-State Northridge Invitational, Nov. 12-14. For complete results from the New Mexico Invitational, visit golobos.com.
