SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Arizona women's tennis team finished the first and second rounds of play at the 2002 Omni Hotels West Region Women's Championship Thursday. Sophomore Kelly Perry and freshman Kristy Randono both advanced to the third round of play with wins over players from USD, UCLA, and Loyola Marymount University. Perry and Randono teamed up to compete in qualifying doubles action, and the duo advanced to the third round.
In singles play, Perry advanced to the second round with a bye. In second-round action, Perry competed against Jenny Brown of USD. Brown had to retire after losing the first game of the match, 6-1. Perry will compete against USD's Tara Livesay in the third round.
In other qualifying singles action, Kristy Randono won her first round match by defeating LMU's Diana Vinis, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Randono moved on to the second round of play, in which she defeated Nina Yaftali of UCLA, 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(8). Randono will play against Hawaii's Pollina Krauets in the third round.
In qualifying doubles action, Perry and Randono advanced to the second round of play with a bye. In the second round, Arizona's duo downed Paige Mainor and Mio Fukushima of Hawaii, 8-2. In the third round, the pair will contend with the winner of a match between Kelly Takeshita and Carolyn Mitchell of UCR and Anne Rapp and Tara Livesay of USD.
The Wildcat women's tennis team will continue qualifying singles and doubles play and begin main-draw singles and doubles play Friday, Oct. 25.
