EUGENE, Ore.--Arizona (27-9) kept up its hitting attack on its Oregon road swing and used 13 of them to defeat the Ducks, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Howe Field.
UA pitcher Taryne Mowatt kept the Oregon hitters off balance with one-hit pitching, weathering a rainy day in allowing the only run on a wild pitch. She struck out 12, walked five and hit a batter in improving to 16-7. She helped strand seven UO base runners.
Better, the Cats improved to 4-1 in league play while Oregon (25-16) stayed winless at 0-5 in Pac-10 action.
The Cats put runs on the board in the first. A hit by Lauren Schutzler, a walk by Jenae Leles and a single by Stacie Chambers loaded the bases with one out. Sam Banister and Laine Roth followed with RBI singles and Callista Balko made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly. UO starter Melissa Rice (11-8) was lifted after Banister's hit.
The Ducks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second with a walk by Joanna Gail, an error by Roth and a walk to Carlyn Re, but UA pitcher Taryne Mowatt got a foulout and struck out leadoff batter Courtney Kivett to strand all three.
UA extended the lead by a run in the fourth when Cyndi Duran led off with a single, moved up on a sac bunt by Adrienne Acton, moved to third on an error by the third baseman and scored on K'Lee Arredondo's infield grounder RBI.
UA made it 5-0 with an RBI double by Balko after a Roth collected her third single of the day.
The Ducks got on the scoreboard with one hit in the bottom of the fifth. Blair Williamson singled to center, was sacrificed to second by Sari-Jane Jenkins and scored on a wild pitch by Mowatt.
The Cats complete their road swing with a game against the Ducks at noon Sunday. Arizona will then open a four-game homestand Wednesday against No. 1 Arizona State with weekend games against Washington and UCLA.
