AUSTIN, Tex. - Freshman Nikki Koller carded a 1-under round of 73 to help #20-ranked Arizona into 12th place at the Betsy Rawls Invitational, Friday morning at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Koller carded three birdies on the day and was threatening to crack 70 before a double bogey on the 11th hole pushed her total to 2-over. She bounced back with two pars, then posted her final birdie of the day on the 14th hole before shooting par the rest of the way in.
Sitting in a tie for 15th place, Koller is just three shots off the individual lead. Six different players share the day one lead after shooting 2-under 70. Koller continues her strong play during the Spring portion of the season that has seen her average 72.8 through the first two events.
Brittany Benvenuto was even at the turn before finishing her round at 3-over 75 while Amanda Wilson made her return to the Wildcat lineup by firing a 77. Both Isabelle Boineau and Emily Mason finished the first 18 holes by carding 81.
The Wildcats are playing the event without its two leading scorers Alejandra Llaneza and Margarita Ramos. Both players qualified to participate in the LPGA Mastercard Classic at the BasqueReal Country Club in Huixquilucan, Mexico. Former Wildcat Loreno Ochoa shot a 7-under 65 to take the first round lead. Ramos shot 76 on day one while Llaneza is a stroke behind her teammate after shooting 77.
Round two starts for the Wildcats at 9:54 a.m. (CST) as Mason leads the five-player Wildcat contingent back out on the course for the second set of 18 holes.
