TUCSON - No. 6 University of Arizona Wildcat women's golf earned a runner-up finish at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Tuesday. The two-day, three-round event was hosted by the University of Hawaii at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course in Kane'ohe, O'ahu.
The Wildcats picked up a second-place finish on the final day of competition after ending day two in third place. UA shot rounds of 299, 301 and 302 for a total of 902 (+38). No. 10 Arizona State won the team race with a score of 887 (+23). No. 21 Notre Dame rounded out the top three after carding a 904 (+40).
"We struggled again today but were able to regain second place," head coach Laura Ianello said. "We hating losing to our rival but we honestly got out-played this week. It was a great tournament for Alejandra (Llaneza), Isabelle (Boineau) and Nikki (Koller). We need to play well this week to have a chance to win in San Diego next week."
Individually, No. 87 senior Alejandra Llaneza was Arizona's leader with a second-place finish. She recorded a score of 216 (E) with rounds of 70, 73 and 73. No. 21 junior Isabelle Boineau moved from eighth place to fifth place on the final day of action. Her three-round total came to 223 (+7). No. 29 junior Margarita Ramos shot a 231 (+15) to finish tied for 24th.
Arizona's fourth finisher was sophomore Kyndall Ardoin. Her three-round total of 233 (+17) was good for a tie for 34th-place finish. Rounding out the Wildcat five was freshman Haley Andreas. She shot rounds of 78, 85 and 81 for a total of 244 (+28) and a tie for 76th-place finish.
Junior Nikki Koller played as an individual. She finished tied for 12th after starting the day tied for 36th. She collected a three-round score of 227 (+11).
The Wildcats will play next at The Battle at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, March 20-22, in San Diego, Calif.
