UA Drops Heartbreaker At No. 13 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - After dropping the first two sets, Arizona battled back to tie the match, but No. 13 Pepperdine was able to win the deciding fifth set to win 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 12-15) and earn the Pepperdine Asics Classic title on Saturday night inside Firestone Fieldhouse.

Pepperdine improves its record to 4-1 on the season, while Arizona falls to 3-2. The Wildcats out-hit the Waves .244 to .228 on the night, while also out-blocking them 14-7. However, Pepperdine connected on 13 more kills than Arizona.

Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz.), Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Taylor Arizobal (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles to pace the Wildcats. Brown dished out 51 assists from her setter position, while also adding 13 digs and three kills. Kingdon recorded her third double-double of the year with 23 kills and 15 digs. Meanwhile, Arizobal connected on 14 kills with 11 digs and a match-high four service aces. Brown and Kingdon were named to the all-tournament team.

Freshman Halli Amaro (Los Alamitos, Calif.) recorded her second straight double-digit kill effort as she finished the night with 11 kills, five digs and five blocks. Junior libero Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with a team-high 19 digs to lead the Arizona defense.

Arizona returns to the McKale Center on Friday for the Arizona Invitational. The Wildcats will face Iona and TCU on Friday before closing out the tournament against Lipscomb on Saturday.
