TUCSON, Ariz. ?- No. 3 Arizona (7-0) defeated Tennessee Tech (2-2), 5-1, in UA’s home opener, as part of the Worth Wildcat Invitational.

The Wildcats used a solid performance out of the circle from Taryne Mowatt (4-0), who struck out a career-high 18 batters in her fourth complete-game victory of the year.

Arizona rallied to score two runs on no hits in the top of the first inning.  The Wildcats used two walks, a dropped third strike and a tricky first and third play to score the game’s first pair of runs.

It appeared Arizona was done in the second, as well, but Adrienne Acton hit a dribbler to short which was misplayed.  Golden Eagle shortstop Beth Boden hurled the Acton groundball passed the first baseman and into right field.  Acton used her speed to make Boden’s is mistake a four-base error, and increasing UA’s lead to 3-0.

The Wildcat offense kept the pressure on in the third, as UA use a Chelsie Mesa triple and a Sam Banister sac fly to score its fourth run of the game.

Mowatt struck out every Golden Eagle the first time through the order, but leadoff hitter Katie Speiser connected on the full-count offering for a home run.

Acton repeated her second inning feat in the fourth, as she hit a grounder to third, which was thrown into right field.  It appeared Acton would stop at third base, but the TTU right fielder missed her cutoff, allowing Acton to score during her at-bat again.
