GLENVIEW, Ill. - Three Arizona women’s golfers finished 36 holes of play at even par to help the Wildcats into second place at the 2009 Windy City Collegiate Championships, Monday afternoon at The Glen Club.
Sophomores Margarita Ramos and Isabelle Boineau were joined by freshman Sherlyn Popelka at even par after the first two rounds of play. Popelka shot 2-under on the first round while her elder teammates carded matching rounds of 72 over both rounds.
The Wildcats finished the day 6-over par with a two-round team total of 582. Purdue leads the field at 12-under par after shooting 9-under in the opening round. Arizona sits one shot in front of New Mexico while Tulane and Northwestern round out the top five.
Popelka bounced back from a tough 3-over start on her first two holes to record five birdies over the next 11 holes to move to 2-under par in her opening round. She cancelled out a bogey on the 15th hole by carding a sixth birdie of the round on the 1st hole, her 18th of the round, to lock in her 2-under round of 70. She finished the day with eight birdies while the Cats tallied a total of 24 on the day.
Junior Alejandra Llaneza is 9-over after two rounds of play while senior Brittany Benvenuto rounded out the squad with rounds of 81 and 76, respectively. The three Wildcats at even par are all tied for 9th place, seven shots behind tournament-leader Maude-Aimee Blanc of Purdue, who finished the day with rounds of 68 and 69, respectively.
The final round will be played on Tuesday morning with the Wildcats heading out among the final groups starting at 9:00 a.m. (CST)
