TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona’s softball team continued its success at its fall tournament with an 8-0, six-inning victory over New Mexico and a 3-0 win over Central Arizona.

The first game’s winning pitcher Taryne Mowatt shut out the Lobos, allowing only two hits, while striking out 11 of the 22 batters she faced in her 6 innings of work.  Alicia Hollowell one-upped her pitching mate Mowatt with 16 strikeouts in 7 shutout innings in the circle.

Against New Mexico, UA drew first blood in the bottom of the first, when Caitlin Lowe led off with a bunt single.  After Lowe stole second base, Autumn Champion followed with a bunt single of her own, advancing Lowe to third.  Newcomer Chelsie Mesa drove Lowe home with a sac fly to center field.

The score remained 1-0 until the Lowe-Mesa combination came up in the third.  Lowe led off with an infield single, followed by another stolen base.  After a Champion groundout, Mesa brought Lowe around to score with a single to left.  Despite a Kristie Fox walk and a Lobo error, UA stranded two runners and settled for just the one run.

Up two runs in the third, UA loaded the base on two walks and Lowe’s third single of the game.  Champion doubled the Wildcat lead with a two-run single, followed by another Mesa sac fly.  Fox capped the UA rally at four runs by driving in Champion, giving UA a 6-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Callista Balko singled to left, driving Lowe and Champion home to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.

Against Central, UA broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second on Sam Banister’s two-out single that drove in Fox.  The Wildcat bats kept the pressure on, with Lowe leading the attack.  Lowe led off with a single, stole second base, and scored on a Mesa single.

Central threatened in the top half of the fourth, when Jessica DeFreitas nubbed a single down the third base line.  DeFreitas’ contact was Central’s first in 10 batters, startling the UA third baseman Banister.  Banister’s throw went down the right field line, giving Central its first runner of the game.  Following a strikeout, a walk and a passed ball; the Vaqueros found themselves with runners on second and third and just one out.  Hollowell responded by promptly striking out the next two batters to end the rally.

The Va queros tried to ignite a rally again in the top of the sixth, when two singles and a stolen base amounted to runners on second and third.  But UA sniffed out Central’s second suicide squeeze attempt of the game, deadening the rally.

Arizona next plays Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium, with 3 and 5 p.m. start times, against the Hum-Babe Cats and Pima, respectively.
