HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Arizona women's golf team shot an opening round of 296 at the Golf World Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C. on Friday to earn a tie for fourth place. The Wildcats are 12 strokes off the pace set by tournament leader, Duke.
Freshman Lorena Ochoa shot an opening round of four-under-par 68 to take the individual lead by one shot over Young-A Yang of Tennessee. This marks the third consecutive tournament where Ochoa, the nation's No. 1 golfer according to the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, has held the lead after one round of play.
The Wildcats' other freshman standout, Natalie Gulbis, carded a two-over 74 to tie for 23rd place. Senior Christelle Cuzon shot 76 (+4) to come in at 38th place. Junior Cristina Baena, the nation's third-ranked golfer, finished the day tied for 44th after shooting a six-over 78. Rounding out the Wildcat lineup is senior Christina Monteiro, who carded an 84 (+12) to end the day in 59th place.
Tournament leader Duke shot an opening round of 284 to take a seven shot lead over second-place Auburn. Also in the top five are Texas and Tennessee.
Play continues Saturday on the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall Plantation on Hilton Head Island.
