Collier Qualifies For NCAA Championships on 1-Meter Board

Oklahoma City, Okla. ?- The Arizona men’s and women’s diving teams completed the first day of competition at the Zone ?'E’ Diving Championships Thursday, qualifying junior John Collier to compete at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

 

            Collier finished second in the 1-meter competition with 654.00 points, behind defending national champion Joona Pahakka from ASU. Collier is now qualified to compete at the national championships with the men’s swim team in Minneapolis, Minn. On March 24-26.

           

“John dived as consistently as he has all season,” said head diving coach Michele Mitchell-Rocha. “John handled his position with class and at this meet, second place is as good as first because they both get to go to nationals.”

 

            Seniors Daniela Bemme and Claire Febvay finished 14th and 15th respectively in the 3-meter competition. Bemme tallied 436.60 points while Febvay posted 434.10 points.

 

            “The 3-meter board is their weakest event,” said Rocha. “The girls will do better tomorrow and definitely on Saturday when they dive platform, which is what both girls are best known for.”

 

            The Wildcats will resume competition tomorrow at 12 p.m. (CST). The men will compete in the 3-meter competition and the women will be on the 1-meter.
