TUCSON – Arizona men’s swimming seniors Josh Arreguin and Nicolas Nilo have each earned a bid to compete at the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, July 17-August 2.
Arreguin, a Catalina Foothills product, qualified for Team Mexico with a strong showing in the 200m breaststroke competition during trials held in Mexico last month.
Nilo, a Beijing Olympic participant and seven-time All-American in 2009, set two South American records this past week while qualifying in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the Maria Lenk Trophy trials.
On Tuesday, Nilo set the South American record in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:46.90 during prelims. American Michael Phelps currently holds the world record in the 200m freestyle event set in Beijing. Nilo also swam on the 4 x 100m free relay team that set a new South American mark of 3:14.45.
The United States conducts trials this summer during the ConocoPhillips National Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind. July 7-11.
Arreguin and Nilo join teammate Jean Basson as qualifiers for the World Championships so far.
