CHAPPEL HILL, N.C. -
Despite earning some noteworthy singles wins, the No. 28 Arizona women’s tennis team fell to No. 7 North Carolina, 4-2 in the second round of NCAA Regionals on Saturday.
The Wildcats fell in a 3-0 hole early after losing the doubles point and falling in two quick singles matches, but did not give up.
“The girls fought so hard today and I am really proud of them for hanging in there and battling back after losing quickly at No. 5 and No. 6,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “Our top four had to dig deep, but they did and in the end, it really could have gone either way.”
Sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) defeated No. 38 Zoe De Bruycker in three sets at the No. 1 spot and senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) conquered No. 39 Lauren McHale at the No. 2 spot to narrow the score to 3-2.
After coming back to even the match in the second set, Landsman and No. 104 Caroline Price went to a third-set tiebreaker, where Price finished off the match 9-7 and sealed the win for the Tar Heels.
“Sarah had several match points to even it to 3-3, but wound up losing in the third,” Maes said. “It was heartbreaking to say the least, but boy, what an amazing effort.”
