TUCSON -University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball head coach Niya Butts has officially announced the 30-game schedule for the 2011-12 season. UA will face 10 teams that advanced to the NCAA or WNIT Tournaments last season.
Arizona will prep for the Pac-12 teams with a schedule of two exhibition and 12 non-conference games. The Wildcats will travel to play at Georgia Southern, at Georgia State, at New Mexico State and at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. In the friendly confines of McKale Center, UA will host Wichita State, North Texas, Long Beach State, New Mexico and UNLV.
At the Hukilau Invitational, hosted by BYU-Hawai'i, Arizona will face BYU on Dec. 1, Syracuse on Dec. 2 and BYU-Hawai'i on Dec. 3. The tournament will take place in Laie, Hawai'i, on the island of Oahu.
The Pac-12 portion will start with a game at Arizona State on December 31. The Wildcats will make trips to conference foes Oregon (1/12), Oregon State (1/15), Washington (1/26), Washington State (1/28), Colorado (2/9), Utah (2/11), USC (2/23) and UCLA (2/25). Arizona will host UCLA (1/5), USC (1/7), Utah (1/19), Colorado (1/21), California (2/2), Stanford (2/4), Washington State (2/16), Washington (2/18)and Arizona State (3/3).
In the non-conference match-ups, Wichita State to the first round, BYU to the third round and Syracuse to the fourth round all advanced to the WNIT last season. In conference action, Arizona State, UCLA, Utah and Stanford advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The Cardinal was an NCAA Final Four squad. USC, Colorado and California played in the WNIT and the Women of Troy advanced to the WNIT Championship game.
The 2011-12 season with mark the first time Arizona has faced BYU-Hawai'i, Georgia State and Georgia Southern. Additionally, the Wildcats will face seven teams with new head coaches for the 2011-12 slate: New Mexico State, North Texas, New Mexico, UCLA, Utah, Washington and California.
The championship portion of the schedule will start with the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament on March 7-10 with games being held at USC's Galen Center and the Staples Center.
The season will begin with exhibition contests against Western State (Colo.) on Nov. 2 and Grand Canyon University on Nov. 6. Tickets are available for the season by calling the McKale Ticket Office at (800) 452-2287.
