TUCSON – Each week, Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff will select Player of the Week honorees based on performance leading up to and including the game each week. The Wildcats (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) upset then-No.10 USC, 39-36, on Saturday at Arizona Stadium.
Co-Offense: Matt Scott, Senior, Quarterback
Scott accounted for four touchdowns and 469 yards of total offense to pace Arizona against USC on Saturday. He completed 27-of-50 passes for 369 yards and three touchdowns, and added a career-best 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Co-Offense: Austin Hill, Sophomore, Receiver
Hill was Arizona’s leading receiver against USC with 10 catches for a career-best 259 yards. Saturday’s game marked his fourth 100-yard game of the season and the fifth of his career. He averages 17.4 yards per haul and 117.1 yards per game. He ranks fourth in the Pac-12 and tied for 21st nationally in receptions per game (6.75) and No. 2 in the league and No. 5 nationally is yards per game (117.1).
Defense: Marquis Flowers, Junior, Linebacker
Flowers accounted for three takeaways against USC. He finished the game with a pair of interceptions, a forced fumble and seven total tackles. On the game’s opening possession, Flowers halted a 13-play drive for the Trojans when he intercepted Matt Barkley at the UA 26-yardline. Flowers returned it 14 yards, which set up a seven-play, 60-yard touchdown for the Wildcats to claim an early edge. The interceptions were the second and third of Flowers’ career.
Special Teams: Derrick Rainey, Junior, Cornerback
Rainey, earning his second-straight start at cornerback, ended the game with four solo tackles. He also played an important role among the Wildcats’ special teams units. His coverage and blocking performance as a member of the punt team allowed Kyle Dugandzic to average 42.8 yards per kick with four landing inside the 20-yard line. Additionally, Rainey and the unit did not allow a punt return yard in the game to USC’s Robert Woods.
From the scout team, freshman receiver Jarrell Bennett on offense, senior defensive lineman Christian Upshaw on defense and freshman receiver Clive Georges on special teams were also honored for their efforts during the USC game preparations.
Arizona hits the road on Sat., Nov. 3 for a matchup at UCLA. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
