TUCSON - Game 4 Worth Wildcat Invitational - Arizona (visitor) vs. Boston University

Note: See earlier story for other game results

No. 2-ranked Arizona exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 17-1 victory over Boston University in UA's opener of the Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament Friday afternoon.

UA sent 14 batters to the plate, collected 10 hits, three home runs and left no runners on base in putting the huge number on the board in the opening frame.

It was a portent of things to come. The Cats set a school record with seven home runs -- nearly half of their 16 hits in the game.

Caitlin Lowe led off with a single and stole second. Autumn Champion walked. Wendy Allen doubled them both in. Mackenzie Vandergeest walked and UA tried a double steal but ALlen was thrown out at third. Shelley Schultz singled, then Jackie Coburn slugged a three-run home run to left, knocking BU starter DeKenya Williams (1-3).

Kristie Fox singled, and then Samantha Quintero homered. Candace Abrams singled, and then Lowe doubled. An out later, Allen singled in those two, and then Vandergeest hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring.

Jennifer Martinez replaced Coburn at third, and walked to lead off the UA second, scoring shortly thereafter on a home run by Fox, her second of the year, to make it 13-0.

The Terriers got on the scoreboard in the third, with an unearned run. Jamie Haas reached on an error, moved up on a ground out and scored on a single by Chiya Louie. BU loaded the bases with three more singles, but UA pitcher Leslie Wolfe got the third out.

Fox hit her second home run of the game with no one aboard in the fourth to push the lead to 14-0. Crystal Farley led off with a home run in the fifth, then Vandergeest blasted her second of the game after an Allyson Von Licechtenstein single for the final two runs.

Wolfe improved to 3-0 for the year. UA moved to 17-0 overall and was to play Stanford in a non-conference game following.

Rain fell intermittently throughout each of the first four games in the tournament, which continues Saturday and Sunday.
