Balzert and Perry Prevail in Flight II Doubles Finals; Jakowlew wins Flight III

SEATTLE, Wash. ?- Arizona senior Kelly Perry and junior Stephanie Balzert defeated Oregon’s Ester Bak and Davina Mendiburu 8-4 for the Flight II Doubles championship at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships.  Sophomore Kasia Jakowlew came out on top with a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Oregon’s Jamie Marshall in the Flight III Singles final.

 

Perry and Balzert, Arizona’s projected No. 2 pair behind nationally ranked seniors Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar, won two matches against Washington doubles pairs before defeating Bak and Mendiburu.

 

Jakowlew, who played sparinginly in the fall, defeated Washington’s Monika Kolbovic in the first round before winning three consecutive matches against Oregon players.  Of Jakowlew’s four victories en rout to the championship, three of the matches went three sets with Jakowlew having to come from behind after losing the first.

 

Arizona will play its first team match of the season at the Robson Tennis Center, Friday, Jan. 21 against UC Davis beginning at 2:00 p.m. MST.
