TUCSON--In a match that went down to the final set, the No. 55 Arizona women's tennis team edged by No. 54 Sacramento State, 4-3 Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

In doubles action, the Hornets came out strong, taking wins on courts one and two. On court three, sophomores Natasha Marks and Debora Castany downed the duo of Aileen Tsan and Gayane Sarkisian 8-2.

Down 1-0, the Cats would have to take four singles wins to take the match.

First to finish was senior Natalia Toporowska, who dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Clarisse Baca on court four. Toporowska was then followed by sophomore Sarah Landsman on court 2. The No. 124 ranked sophomore came out strong against Rebeca Delgado, winning the first set 6-0. It looked like Delgado was going to come back in set two when she went up 3-2, but the rest of the set belonged to Landsman, who took it 6-3.

On court five, Castany made quick work of Sarkisian, sweeping through the first set 6-0 before defeating the Hornet 6-3 in the second. Senior Claire Reitsch notched another point for the Cats with her win over Maria Meliuk on court three. Rietsch led all the way in the first set, winning 6-2. Meliuk came back at the beginning of the second set, taking a 2-1 lead, but the Wildcat senior came back to take the win at 6-3.

With the score at 3-2, in favor of the Wildcats, it would take a win on courts 1 or 6 to clinch the match.

Junior Jane Huh lost a close first set 7-5 to Zalina Nazarova on court six, and went down 0-3 in the second set. Huh then fought back and tied it up at 5-5, but was unable to overtake Nazarova, losing 7-5.

All eyes then turned to the battle on court one. Like Huh, No. 107 Marks lost set one to Tatsiana Kapshai in a 7-5 decision, and was down at the beginning of set two. Kapshai took an early lead, going up 3-2, then 4-3. Marks continued to win the next three points to take the second set 6-3.

In the set that would decide the match, Kapshai took a 1-0 lead, but fell behind when the sophomore out of Nottingham, England won the next two points. The next point went back to Kapshai, tying it up at 2 all, but it was all Marks from there. The sophomore took the next four points, winning the set 6-2, and taking the match for the Cats at 4-3.

"I'm really pleased with the way our team played today." Said head coach Vicky Maes, "We were flat in the doubles, but regrouped and did a great job in singles. Sac State is a solid team and this win was very satisfying."

Up next, Arizona will host the State Farm Territorial Cup match-up against No. 27 Arizona State on Saturday, April 17 at 1pm, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats will also be honoring their three seniors, Claire Rietsch, Natalia Toporowska, and Ariane Masschelein.
