Bonano, Fischer Earn Academic Nods

TUCSON - Arizona football senior John Bonano and junior Jake Fischer were named to the Capital One Academic All-District team, presented by CoSIDA, it was announced on Thursday. Both are first time honorees by the association but are returning members of the Pac-12 All-Academic team. Arizona is the lone Pac-12 school to have two players recognized and is tied for fifth-most in the nation among BCS schools. With their all-district awards, both players will move on to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.

Arizona's kickoff, PAT and field goal specialist, Bonano holds a 3.92 GPA as a physiology major. He is 10-of-16 in field goal attempts, a perfect 37-for-37 in PATs and, in the Pac-12, ranks eighth overall and third among kickers scoring an average of 7.4 points per game.

Bonano also handles kickoff duties with 59 boots on the season totaling 3,678 yards. He averages 62.3 yards per kick with 31 touchbacks. He was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week after Arizona's upset of then-No. 18 Oklahoma State, 59-38. He was a perfect 3-for-3 in field goal attempts and 5-for-5 in PATs. He scored a career-best 15 points.

The Wildcats' defensive anchor and starting middle linebacker, Fischer is majoring in marketing with a 3.31 GPA. He ranks second in the Pac-12 in tackles with an average of 8.9. He leads the team with 80 total tackles, including 57 unassisted, on the season.

Fischer's stat line also includes 5.5 tackles for a loss of 15 yards, two passes broken up, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3 for collecting a then-career high 13 tackles and forcing a fumble in Arizona's OT 24-17 win against Toledo.

The Wildcats will return to Arizona Stadium on Sat., Nov. 10 to host Colorado for Homecoming. The game will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. MT and will air nationally on FX.
