TUCSON, Ariz.- Assistant coach A.J. Malis has decided to leave the Arizona volleyball program, it was announced today. The third-year assistant has decided to focus his energies on his family and his club team in Tucson.

"I am grateful to the University of Arizona and (head coach) David Rubio for the opportunity to represent the Wildcats on staff for the past three incredible years," said Malis. "I will miss the team and I wish them the best of luck in the future."

During Malis' stint as an Arizona assistant, the Wildcats won the 2000 Pac-10 title, advanced to three Elite Eight appearances in the NCAA tournament and played in Arizona's first-ever Final Four in 2001.

"The team, (associate head coach) Charita (Johnson) and I met with A.J. and we want to wish him the best of luck," said Rubio. "A.J. has been a tremendous asset to our program and his efforts and energy to the team, the support staff and our fans did not go unnoticed."

Malis, his wife Michelle and his three children Zachery, Ethan and Ainsley plan to continue to make Tucson their home.

The current staff will begin an immediate search for Malis' replacement.
