TUCSON - The Arizona Football team continued its 2008 Fall Camp with an efficient evening workout at the Rincon Vista Complex on Tuesday evening, the first practice at the typical home of Fall Camp practices. With two sharp practices on Tuesday, the coaches have given the Wildcats a well-deserved day off on Wednesday.
"I really like the way we have been practicing," Head Coach Mike Stoops told the team after the second of two practices on Tuesday. "We had a good, physical practice this morning and I liked what we accomplished tonight."
"As we progress through camp, each day is going to be more critical," Stoops continued. "We've shown tremendous improvement, but we have to keep working hard. We can't be satisfied with where we are at right now."
The evening practice on Tuesday was lighter than the morning session, which including full contact drills. In the evening, the team took off the pads and put a focus on the fundamental parts of the game.
After about an hour of individual and group drills, the focus turned to special teams and last second field goals. Redshirt senior, Jason Bondzio, made five field goals in five attempts. His long was a 56-yard field goal. Backup kicker, redshirt freshman Alex Zendejas, completed a 42-yarder and missed from 48 yards.
Punts and kickoffs were also covered. The punts were divided up between Zendejas and redshirt sophomore Kyle Day. Returning their punts were Thomas and freshman Keola Antolin. Kickoffs were handled by Bondzio with junior Devin Ross and Thomas back to receive them.
A short seven-on-seven session focused on plays inside the red zone. Senior Willie Tuitama completed 10 passes in 15 attempts for 83 yards and three touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore A.J. Simmons had three receptions for 42 yards and three touchdowns. The other touchdown was caught by sophomore tight end Rob Gronkowski - a seven yard scoring play.
The remaining practice was an 11-on-11 team segment. Tuitama completed 16-of-24 passes for 237 yards. Tuitama registered passes to ten different receiversas the offense showed they it is capable of making big plays.
Redshirt freshman William Wright had a 50-yard pass reception, finishing with two receptions for 54 yards. The other big play was a 60-yard pass to junior Terrell Turner. Junior running back Xavier Smith had three carries for eight yards. The defense had three passes broken up by senior Marquis Hundley and juniors Devin Ross and Sterling Lewis.
Arizona will resume its Fall Camp practice schedule with another two-a-day on Thursday.
