TUCSON--Alyce Jorgensen followed a Gina Carbonatto walk with a home run to start Pacific's scoring in the bottom of the first, and while the Tigers kept scoring pitcher Chelsea Engle took care of business in the circle to propel University of the Pacific to a 13-0 victory over Howard in second-round action of the NCAA Softball Championships regional at Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium here Saturday.
Pacific (35-23) moved to the final Saturday game against Mississippi State for the right to meet host Arizona on Sunday. Either the Tigers or Bulldogs would have to beat the host Cats twice for the regional. The season ended for the Bison (35-21) in their first NCAA appearance for the six-year-old Division I program.
Brianne Gutierrez collected the first NCAA-tournament hit in Howard's history, a shot off the glove of UOP shortstop Hagen in the top of the third. Engle held Howard to that lone hit for her four innings of pitching, giving way to Heidi Helberg in the fifth.
Vianney Campos and Lizzie Hagen added RBI singles, and Pacific plated another run on a throwing error to push the lead to 5-0 after two innings. Kellee Wilson led off the Pacific third with a home run to left to make it 6-0. Carbonatto added an RBI single to push it to 7-0.
Pacific added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to punctuate its 12-hit effort. Dale McNeal took the loss for Howard.
