LOS ANGELES -

Despite earning two notable wins in doubles play, the No. 28 Arizona women’s tennis team fell to No. 4 USC, 6-1 on Friday in Los Angeles.

Senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) and sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) defeated the nation’s No. 2-ranked doubles team in their 9-8 win over Christian and Santamaria at the No. 1 spot.

Sophomores Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) also earned a win in doubles play with their defeat of Lao and Ramos to give the Wildcats the doubles point to start the match.

“We did a fantastic job in the doubles,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “The energy was good and the kids were excited. Tash and Lacey got a great win against the No. 2 team in the country.”

In singles play, Arizona fought hard against the Trojans’ stacked lineup, which features four players ranked in the top 76.

Stubbe pushed No. 76 Kaitlyn Christian into a three-set thriller, while Smyth, Marks and freshman Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) all fell in tiebreakers.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t hang on in singles,” Maes said. “We certainly had opportunities, but we came up short mentally. We need to learn to stay the course. None of these top-10 teams are going to fold, ever.”

The Wildcats will turn it around for another tough challenge as they face No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, April 8 at noon.
