ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Kenzie Fowler twirled a two-hitter and Arizona put up five runs before New Mexico saw the plate as the Wildcats upended the Lobos, 8-0, on an evening where the wind gusted upwards of 50 miles per hour at Lobo Field.
Fowler (17-2) struck out seven and walked four in the run-rule victory.
UNM's Kaela DeBroeck (5-7) was given the hook after allowing five runs and issuing four walks before recording an out. Samantha Gatson came in to relieve for three innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Freshman Kari Gutierrez fared the best of the trio, allowing one hit in two frames.
Brittany Lastrapes led off the game with a first-pitch home run, then Brigette Del Ponte drew a bases-loaded walk before Lini Koria hit a bloop single to score K'Lee Arredondo. Kristen Arriola's base knock plated Stacie Chambers and Del Ponte and opened up a 5-0 lead.
In the Arizona (26-3) third, Lasrapes nabbed her second RBI of the game on a two-out single, then Lauren Schutzler knocked in two more with a wind-aided double down the left field line to bring the margin to 8-0.
Fowler loaded the bases on three walks with one out in the UNM (10-17) half, but got two batters looking to end the threat.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. (Noon Tucson time).
