The Arizona gymnastics team will make its 23rd straight postseason appearance when the Wildcats travel to Fayetteville, Ark. Saturday, April 4th as part of the 2009 South Central Regional.
"We're excited to be going for the 23rd straight year," said Arizona head coach Bill Ryden. "We certainly have a mission in front of us and will be competing against some quality teams, but we'll give it our best shot."
Arizona made its way to the regional as the No. 4 seed in the South Central Region and will face off against No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Arkansas, No. 3 Michigan, No. 5 Southern Utah and No. 6 Arizona State. The top two teams from each regional will move on to the national championship meet April 16-18 in Lincoln, Neb.
The Wildcats are coming off a fifth place finish at the Pac-10 Championships, posting a 194.325. The team struggled, counting falls on the bars and beam, but posted solid scores on the floor (49.200) and vault (48.925).
As a conference, the Pac-10 has six of the seven schools that compete in gymnastics in regionals. Stanford is the lone No. 1 seed, while Oregon State and Pac-10 Champ UCLA are both No. 2 seeds. Arizona captured a No. 4 seed, Washington placed No. 5 and Arizona State got in as a No. 6.
Individual qualifiers are still being decided on and will be announced later in the week.
