Senior Women's Tennis Player Natasha Marks -
This weekend was another chance where we got to play at home and we took full advantage of that. Playing at home is always nice and it’s good when you have a couple of weeks in a row where you can really build on your game and confidence on your home courts.
Last weekend we took on the San Diego State Aztecs, who we have played all four years that I have been at the U of A. After defeating USD last weekend, we were ready to continue our streak and beat another San Diego team.
The match started strong as we won the doubles point. This is an area where we have struggled in our last few matches against tough teams, but today we pulled it together and won the point.
In singles, sophomore Lacey (“Mighty Mouse”) Smyth was the first match to finish on court one with an impression performance over her German opponent winning 6-2, 6-2.
Next to finish was my fellow senior Sarah Landsman who had a few problems with the ref and had to have a talk about official ITA rulebook! I am sure umpires need to get glasses sometimes and read the rulebook once over. Anyway… After a brief argument, Sarah brought home the win in straight sets.
I was next to finish and Kim followed shortly after. She made huge improvements with her game and found herself finishing point off at the net!
Matches were complete on the first four courts and we moved over to court five where sophomore Susan McRann was in a battle and still in the first set. The match went all the way to a third set tiebreak, but ended with an Aztec win.
It was a good strong effort by the lady tennis cats with a convincing 5-2 victory. We all know we have a lot more to give and better tennis to play and are very much looking forward to this weekend when play two matches against North Texas and Cal Poly.
Once again thanks for everyone who came out at the weekend it was great to have you there! Come and support us on Friday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 18 at noon at the Robson Tennis Center.
