PALO ALTO, Calif. ?- The No. 60 University of Arizona men’s tennis team leaves California after a difficult weekend, capped off by Saturday’s close loss to No. 25 Stanford. The loss comes a day after the Wildcats were defeated by No. 29 Cal 6-1. Against the Cardinals, Arizona was unable to win the doubles point, which ended up breaking the tie after the teams each won three singles matches.

After Claudio Christen and Alex Labrosse dropped their matches at the No. 1 and 6 positions, respectively, the Wildcats found themselves in a hole down 3-0. Sophomore Peter Zimmer put Arizona on the scoreboard with a straight set victory over freshman Kevin Kaiser, but it was not long before Blake Muller sealed the deal for Stanford. His three-set victory at the No. 2 spot over Bruno Alcala clinched the victory for Stanford. In its other two singles matches, Arizona was successful as freshman Ravid Hezi and junior Jason Labrosse fought hard to each win three-set matches.

After beginning the season 0-6, the Cardinals have now won three straight to make them 3-6. The Wildcats, having now lost two in a row, are 2-6 in the spring season but should still be included in next week’s edition of the ITA Fila Collegiate Rankings. Arizona has one match this upcoming week as they host No. 74 UNLV. The match will take place at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center and is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (MST).
