TUCSON -- Utilizing a second half attack, the Arizona Wildcats defeated Weber State 4-0 in Friday night's match up at Mulcahy Stadium.
In Arizona Soccer’s (3-1-0) fourth game, second at home, the pieces fell into place and it started in the 23rd minute of play when sophomore midfielder Karina Camacho connected with freshman forward Renae Cuellar. The California native’s fancy footwork resulted in a 17 yard chip past a fallen goalkeeper, her second goal in three games.
Head Coach Dan Tobias commented on Cuellar’s performance saying, “She’s doing everything we expected her to do.”
Camacho noted how the team’s coming together in only their fourth game. “We’re beginning to pick up on one another’s tendencies,” said the Tucson native, “we get along great, on and off the field.”
Early in the second half sophomore midfielder LEILA AMINI connected with fellow sophomore Laruen Bennett, who netted her first goal on the season via a 4 yard header.
Also netting her first goal on the season was junior forward Jacqueline Broussard. Broussard scored also scored header, this one from five yards out and off the cross from senior forward SALLY THURNER.
Securing the win was junior goalkeeper CHELSEA McINTYRE.
McIntyre closed the game with five saves. The Las Lomas High School graduate made some impressive saves including one jumping deflection with 35 minutes left.
Arizona will face No. 8 Texas on Sunday, “a competitive team,” said Tobias. “That’s why the girls chose Arizona. They know we have a competitive schedule, in and out of conference. ” Last year the Cats defeated, then ranked No. 3 Texas, 2-0.
