CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Brigette Del Ponte hit a grand slam - part of a six-run fourth for Arizona - to spearhead a come-from-behind victory over Hawai'i, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon.
The freshman Del Ponte followed a plunking of Lini Koria and a two-RBI single from Baillie Kirker that gave Arizona (10-1) its first lead of the game. Lauren Schutzler and K'Lee Arredondo led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles and Stacie Chambers walked before Kirker ripped the 1-2 pitch up the middle, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Cats. Del Ponte's blast gave UA a 6-1 lead.
Kirker added another RBI single in the fifth to open up a 7-1 lead, and Koria hit a solo shot in the seventh to add some insurance.
Kenzie Fowler (8-0) gave up three runs on two hits in the complete game victory. The freshman struck out six, but walked seven. Kaia Parnaby was charged with the loss, dropping to 5-3 on the season.
Jenna Rodriguez homered in the second for Hawai'i (9-6), and Amanda Tauali'i drove in a run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fifth. Kelly Majam hit a home run in the seventh to trim the margin to 8-3, the 33rd of the season for UH.
Schedule Note: The game against Cal Poly is currently suspended until 1 p.m. Sunday. The game was halted at 9:58 a.m. because of rain and never resumed. Arizona will play Baylor at 9 a.m. local time.
