TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona women’s golf Head Coach Greg Allen announced today that Shelly Haywood has been named the new assistant golf coach for the women’s program. Haywood, who served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Tucson Country Club, is a graduate of New Mexico State University where she was a member of the highly ranked women’s golf team and earned a degree in professional golf management.
“We are very thrilled to have Shelly on board,” Allen said. “She has a very impressive background and will come in and make our team better right away. She is well known throughout Tucson and is very involved in amateur and junior golf by serving on the USGA women’s pub-links committee.”
A two time All-Big West conference selection at NMSU Haywood is currently a member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division and USGA Women’s Public Links Committee. In 2000-04 she was a member of the West Coast Ladies Tour. Since moving to Tucson in 1993 she worked along side her husband Michael Haywood, the PGA Head Professional, at Tucson Country Club.
Coaching is not new to Haywood. Most recently, Haywood served as the head girls golf coach at Tucson’s Rincon High School where she led the team to a 3rd place finish at the state championship in her first year as coach.
“I’m very excited to be apart of this team. I’ve been in Tucson for 11years and followed this team for some time,” Haywood said. “I’m a teaching instructor by trade and I’m looking forward to teach them and guide them to the next level.”
Arizona will begin its season next week in Tokyo, Japan at the Topy Cup.
