The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team fell, 5-2, in their match against the TCU Frogs. Earning Arizona’s two points of the day were sophomore Mario Urquidi and freshman Robin Chou, who made his duel match debut today.
The day began with doubles play where the Cats won one match. First to finish was the team of Carlos Bermudez and Urquidi on court three. The duo dropped a close battle, 8-6, against Daniel Sanchez and Max Stevens. On court two, Giacomo Miccini and Sebastian Ionescu teamed up to earn the Cats a doubles win. The team defeated Nick Chappell and Paul Chappell, 8-6. With the doubles point on the line, Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson remained locked in a close battle with Will Stein and JT Sundlling. The duo fought hard but dropped the match, 9-7.
With the doubles point in favor of the Frogs, singles action began. The Cats started off slowly, dropping three matches, before earning their first singles win.
First to finish was Bermudez on court three. The freshman from Tucson fought a close first set with Facundo Lugones but was edged, 6-4. In the second set Lugones came out strong and Bermudez fell, 6-1.
Shinde was next to finish on court two where he played Sundling. The freshman and Pune, India native fell, 6-0, 6-3.
On court five, Ionescu was third to finish in his match with Stein. Ionescu fought two close sets but ultimately was edged, 6-4, 6-3. The loss marked the fourth point for the Frogs and clinched the match in their favor.
In his colligate duel play debut, Chou earned the Wildcat’s first point of the day. The freshman from Austin, Texas clinched a close first set against P. Chappell, 7-6 (6). The two fought another close battle in the second set and Chou was able to pull ahead and win, 6-4.
On court one, Miccini finished next in a long match against N. Chappell. Miccini forced the tiebreak in the first set but ultimately fell, 7-6 (5). The Recanati, Italy native clinched the second set with a 7-5 victory. The match entered a tiebreak and N. Chappell pulled ahead of Miccini to clinch the match, 1-0 (6).
Last to finish was Urquidi on court four where he earned the Wildcat’s second point of the day. The sophomore from El Paso, Texas dropped the first set, 6-3, but made a quick recovery and clinched the second, 6-2. The match entered a third set where Urquidi earned a 7-5 victory to finish the day with a win for the Cats.
Arizona falls to 3-6 while TCU improves to 5-6.
The Cats will continue their weekend on the road as they travel to Norman, Okla. to play the Oklahoma Sooners. The match will be held at one of Oklahoma’s three tennis facilities and is set to take place at noon on Sunday, March 4.
