TULSA, Okla. ?C At the end of day two of qualifying play, the Arizona menˇ?s tennis squad is proving to be a formidable opponent behind their captain, Claudio Christen.
Christen began play yesterday against Mariusz Adamski of Wake Forest and won; 4-6, 7-5, 7-6. He then would go onto play Tyler Hochwalt of Florida today and win; 6-1, 7-6(4).
Freshman Jay Goldman went up against Milan Mihailovic of Texas but was defeated; 6-3, 6-0.
Bruno Alcala faced off against NC Stateˇ?s Nick Cavaday, but suffered his first defeat of the season, losing; 6-3, 6-2. In a consolation match, Alcala defeated Keziel Juneau of William & Mary;
In the doubles matches, Peter Zimmer and Alcala teamed up to win big against the DePaul team of Austin Doerner and Jose Moncada; 8-3. In the second round, Zimmer and Alcala faced Jack Baker and Marek Sramek from South Alabama and lost an extremely close match; 9-8(1).
Christen and Goldman took on Jakob Klaeson and Kalle Norberg of Mississippi and were victorious; 8-5. Next they squared off against Luis Diaz Barriga and Ed Corrie of Texas. The twosome would not be as fortunate as they were in their first match and were defeated; 8-5.
For tomorrowˇ?s play, Christen takes on Gary Sacks of USC. The winner will advance to the main draw event this weekend.
The men are hopeful that the tough competition they are facing in the Polo Ralph Lauren Championships will translate to knowledge and experience when Pac-10 regular season begins.
