One of Arizona's best dancers, senior Katie Matusik has become a crowd favorite on both balance beam and floor. Matusik has been a consistent scorer for the Cats on three events, showing her versatility as an athlete, as well as her dedication on the competition floor and in the gym. But what is she like outside of practice? Get to know the behind the scenes Katie - a good humored, Texas girl.
What is your full name?
Katherine Alyssa Matusik
Do you have any nicknames? If so, what are they, and how did you get them?
Katie, Kate, and Katrina. Bill calls me Katrina, I am not really sure why. I think he just likes that name so I will forever be Katrina to him. My teammates call me Kate because, when we are cheering in the gym, it is almost a sin to have a two syllable name.
How long have you done gymnastics?
About 18 years. Wow, I never realized how long it has been!
What is your favorite thing about the sport?
I just love competing. You go out there, your heart starts racing, and then you have an amazing feeling inside when you finish that routine. I also love the performance part of gymnastics. The most amazing gymnasts, to me, are the ones that, when they are competing, you do not want to take your eyes off of them because they are so beautiful to watch.
What is your favorite event, and why?
I love beam and floor. You get to actually perform on both of those events, and that's what I love to do.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of the gym, and why?
Sleeping is what I do best! But when I'm not sleeping I love to watch college football, and hang out with my friends and family.
What is your current favorite movie?
Crazy, Stupid Love. It's a sad, funny, and cute movie all in one.
Name the last five songs you played on your iPod?
Remind me-Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, Crazy Girl- Eli Young Band, Just a Kiss- Lady Antebellum, One and only- Adele, Gravity- John Mayer
What is your favorite board game and why?
It's called "The Game of Things". Every holiday I play it with my family. There's a topic, and each person has to write down something that comes to their mind about that topic. Then, you go around guessing who said what. It's such a fun game to play with people you're close to, and every time we play I'm in tears from laughing so hard.
What is the goofiest thing you have ever done?
For one of the home football games I had to go on the field for halftime, it just so happened to be an ESPN game too, so all their TV equipment was everywhere. The cameras had big, thick cords connected to them and, of course I wasn't paying attention, and next thing I know, I'm getting wrapped up in the camera cords and I had to jump into my teammate, Ellen's arms so I wouldn't get carted away with the camera man going back and forth on his little TV stand. It was so embarrassing!
If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be?
Daniel Tosh from Tosh.0, I just think he is hilarious.
If you were stuck on a desert island, what five items would you want with you?
Food, blankets, a TV, some more food, and a boat.
What is your dream job?
I would LOVE to do Erin Andrews' job, but I am way too camera shy for that!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Texas. Home is where the heart is! But there are definitely places that I would love to visit!
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I hope to stay here and help out with team, and then eventually move back to Texas.
