WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. - Arizona junior Andres Arango has been named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 2-8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Arango won both singles matches on the weekend in straight sets for the Wildcats, who earned wins over No. 34 South Florida and No. 55 Saint Mary's. Against South Florida's Mahmoud Hamed, the Guayaquil, Ecuador, native won 6-0, 6-2. He also won his doubles match with teammate Ravid Hazi, 8-4 against the Bulls. On Sunday, Arango was dominate in his singles match with Maxime Olivan of Saint Mary's, winning 6-0, 6-0. Arizona improved its record to 5-1.
"Andres (Arango) is playing at a whole new level," head coach Tad Berkowitz said. "It is the best tennis I have seen him play at Arizona."
This is the first weekly honor for Arango and the fourth overall for Arizona.
Arizona will be in action again on Saturday Feb. 14, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. against the Dons of San Francisco. The match will be played at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
