LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Arizona men's golf junior varsity team finished in fifth place at the Herb Wimberly Collegiate Classic.
The Wildcats equaled its best round of the tournament, carding a final-round 297 to finish in fifth place with a three-round total of 898 (+34). The squad also tallied a 297 in Friday's first-round action. Wichita State captured the team title in the 10-team field with a three-round 866 (+2) total.
Individually, the Arizona JV was led by senior Tim Weiss. The Mill Valley, Calif., native captured his first career top-10 finish with a 54-hole total of 220 (+4) to tie for eighth place. Weiss carded rounds of 73, 74 and 73 over the two days of competition. Teammate Nick Juszczak also earned a top-10 finish in his second-ever collegiate event. The Phoenix, Ariz., product shot 75-75-71=221 (+5) to finish in a tie for 10th place. Juszczak's final-round 71 was Arizona's only sub-par round of the tournament.
Also competing for the Wildcats was Brandon Smith, who finished tied for 19th place at 227 (+11). It was the fifth top-20 finish for Smith. Nathan Lashley finished tied for 27th at 230 (+14), while Steven Eshbach finished tied for 43rd at 238 (+22). Brian Woolf, who competed as an individual, rounded out the Wildcat lineup by finishing tied for 38th place at 236 (+20).
The 54-hole tournament was hosted by New Mexico State and contested at the University Golf Course, a par 72, 7,017-yard facility.
