Postgame Quotes

Arizona Head Coach Niya Butts
Opening statement
"Obviously, it's a very disappointing loss. I certainly think it has to do with a lack of rebounding on our part. We've been harping on rebounding all year. It's something I come into the press conference talking about, even in victories, that we didn't do a really good job rebounding the basketball. That seems to be what teams are trying to expose."

On Cal
"Cal, I want to give credit to them for coming in here and fighting and playing a tough game. I thought in so many ways they wanted it more, more than we wanted to beat Cal. I think they didn't want to lose to us and that was the bottom line."

On rebounding
"We don't do a good job rebounding, so until we correct that I think this is going to be the problem."

California Head Coach Joanne Boyle
Opening statement
"This was our last road trip of the season, and we knew we had to get things done. We had a lot at stake, and while it wasn't pretty, we still managed to get the win. Defense and rebounds definitely got in done tonight. We knew Arizona was going to stay with the zone, and we had to make them pay. Us taking care of the boards got that done."

On overall contributions of the team
"Gennifer (Brandon) did a great job rebounding and at the line. She really helped us stretch our lead out a bit. Tasha (Vital) really helped coming off the bench. She helped us out with a lot of early shots that got us into the rhythm. Everyone knows that they have to contribute, especially since we are only playing 9. Tonight, we used all nine, and at times we played four guards out to try to spread the floor and give our post a rest. We usually don't do that, but we had to change things up to work with Arizona's zone."

On closing out a close game
"We've lost a lot of games in the last five minutes, but we've also won a lot of games in the last five minutes. It's all a matter of getting experience from those previous games and using that knowledge for our win tonight. We knew that we'd have to get stops going down the stretch."

Arizona Player Quotes
Freshman guard Davellyn Whyte
On the game
"We really focused on getting stops and we did, but we wouldn't convert and they would score. We focused on trying to shut Lawson down but we didn't do the little things."

On playing zone defense
"Sometimes their guards were out but then they came in and crashed the boards. I thought we did well on the two defense."

On the game plan to stop Alexis Gray-Lawson
"We guarded Lawson pretty well, but the shots she made toward the end were crucial."

On the remaining games
"To take one game at a time and go day by day. We just have to play our game. We have to close the game out and we just have to come out hard after the half like we do at the beginning."

Junior forward Ify Ibekwe
On the game
"Our shots weren't falling. Our game plan was defense, box out and rebound. We did that but on offense we didn't convert."

On playing zone defense
"We are supposed to clog the paint. We had stops, but we didn't rebound."

On the game plan to stop Alexis Gray-Lawson
"To try and not let her get open shots and frustrate her. Have someone on her with our hands up and guard her."

On the remaining games
"Our mindset is to go out there and win every game we can."
