TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona softball team blanked Arizona Western College in five innings of exhibition play on Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium. Junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell threw her sixth career no-hitter, striking out 13 of 16 batters faced.
Arizona’s offense struggled until the bottom of the fourth inning, when junior leftfielder Courtney Fossatti singled up the middle to jumpstart the Cats’ bats. Freshman Adrienne Acton pinch ran for Fossatti and scored on an Arizona Western fielding error. With runners on second and third and no one out, senior Jackie Coburn knocked a homer over the right field wall. Freshman catcher Calista Balko and senior designated hitter Candace Abrams hit back-to-back singles into left. Sophomore Cortney Nix ran for Balko and scored on a groundout by senior Allyson Von Liechtenstein. With two out and a runner on third, sophomore Caitlin Lowe hit a ball up the middle, scoring Abrams and putting Arizona up, 6-0.
Arizona Western brought in pitcher Candace Hildebrand to relieve starting pitcher Caley Peterson to face the Wildcats in the fifth. Arizona answered with a one-out, two-run homer to left field by junior Shelly Schultz, ending the game early.
Arizona will be in action again on Saturday when the Cats take on New Mexico and Pima College at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium.
