STANFORD, Calif. - Arizona's Jennie Finch threw a three-hitter as the No. 3 Stanford softball team fell to top-ranked Arizona 8-1 in Pacific-10 Conference action at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats improve to 53-4 overall and 15-2 in conference play, while the Cardinal drops to 46-11-1 and 9-8 in the Pac-10.

Kira Ching's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh was the only run of the game for Stanford. It was her seventh shot of the year. Michelle Thiry followed with a single up the middle, but the Cardinal was unable to score.

The Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a home run from Toni Mascarenas. Nicole Giordano drew a walk and Mascarenas drove the 2-2 pitch over the 200-foot left field fence for a 2-0 Arizona lead.

In the third, the Cats extended their lead on Lauren Bauer's leadoff homer. She sent the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence for a 3-0 U of A lead.

Finch took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but Jessica Allister's leadoff single through the left side gave the Cardinal its first hit. Cassi Brangham walked, putting a runner in scoring position for Stanford. But Allister was caught stealing at third to end the inning.

Tori Nyberg started in the circle for Stanford and went five innings. In the sixth, she gave up three consecutive singles, and Jaime Forman-Lau came on in relief with the bases loaded and no outs. Mackenzie Vandergeest greeted Forman-Lau with a single to left for one run, and a sacrifice fly scored another run for a 5-0 Wildcat lead.

Arizona added three more runs in the seventh. A single and two walks set up a two-run double by Collins. A sacrifice fly to left put the Wildcats ahead 8-0.

Nyberg took the loss for Stanford, giving up seven hits and five runs. She struck out three and walked one in falling to 6-2 on the year. Forman-Lau gave up three runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Finch, who leads the country with her 0.24 ERA, had 13 strikeouts and two walks to improve to 25-0.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday as Stanford's Ramona Shelburne and Jenni Shideler will be honored for Senior Day as they play in their final regular season home game. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
